Academic Coaches assist students in identifying academic goals, provide guidance in academic program and course selection, and help support them as they continue with their next steps. Coaches are available Monday through Friday from 8 to 5 p.m. to help students prepare for an enjoyable and successful academic experience at NMJC. Academic Coaching and Counseling is located in the Ben Alexander Student Learning Center.
Academic Coaches assist with the following:
- Academic Planning: Students can get help in selecting courses to ensure that they meet program requirements, develop a degree plan, and register for courses they need.
- Academic Skills: Students can get help with learning strategies, time management, and organization
- College Policies and Procedures: Students can get answers to questions about course requirements, the transferability of classes, and many other issues.
- Student Services: Counselors and Academic Coaches will assist in connecting students to campus resources and support services.
- Transfer: Students can get information on transferring to a four-year college or university
- Career Counseling: Counselors and Academic Coaches work with the Career Development Advisor to assist students in choosing a career path.
- Personal Counseling: Counselors are available face-to-face as well as virtually through TimelyCare in the student's T-Bird Web Portal.
Planning for effective transfer with maximum efficiency is ultimately the student’s responsibility. Responsible transfer planning includes early and regular consultation with the intended degree-granting institution to ensure that all pre-transfer coursework will meet the requirements of the desired degree.
Academic coaching at NMJC is an integral part of the larger mission of educating students. The primary purpose of the coaching program is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their goals. The ultimate and final responsibility for making decisions about goals and educational plans rests with the individual student. The Academic Coach assists by helping to identify and assess alternatives and consequences of decisions.
Each full-time degree or certificate-seeking student at NMJC is assigned an Academic Coach and is expected to meet with that coach for academic planning prior to each semester’s registration for courses. A faculty member or Counselor may also serve as the student's Academic Coach. Students should:
- know and meet graduation requirements;
- meet with their assigned academic coach during registration periods for discussion of course selection and changes;
- make frequent contact with their Academic Coach to help ensure adequate progress toward educational goals.
