Cosmetology
Program Description
This program offers students a comprehensive education in all aspects of barbering and cosmetology and ensures customer satisfaction. Individuals entering the career path of Cosmetology and Barbering will be apart of a life-long experience to keep up with the ever evolving field. The curriculum meets the standards and requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology and of other careers in the world of hair and beauty. This knowledge and ability are achieved first through lecture and demonstration followed by actual work in a salon atmosphere. Students receive clinical experience that prepares them for job market.
Career and Advancement Opportunities
Graduates are prepared to take the New Mexico licensing exams, and upon receipt of state licenses, they are ready for entry-level positions in a salon. Opportunities abound for students to work toward financial independence.
Requirements
Interested students must interview with the Cosmetology Director and complete an application to the program. Students must complete both the NMJC admissions and Cosmetology program application process. Students must be accepted into the program prior to enrolling in any cosmetology courses.

Courses
COSM223: Course Development and Lesson Planning
Credits 3This course covers planning, analysis, implementation, benefits, outlines, example components of effective lesson plans, principles of preparing lesson plans and practical course reviews.
COSM227: Theory Teaching and Classroom Management
Credits 7This course will focus on the following areas: independent classroom instruction, records and reports, safety measures, classroom conditions and maintenance, classroom supervision and control, classroom problems and solutions and academic advising.
COSM232: Testing and Student Evaluation
Credits 2This course will cover measurement of student skills and achievement. This course will include diagnosis student strengths and weaknesses, promote motivation for study, and assist in the development and assessment of oral, written, and practical tests.
COSM247A: Laboratory Supervision
Credits 7This course will present material in the following areas: independent clinic supervision, client communication, reception desk supervision, inventory control, effective dispensary procedures, supervision of clinic sanitation, client safety and supervision of student’s technical skills.
COSM253: Instructor Theory
Credits 3This course includes orientation, state laws and regulations, employment and compensation information, professional ethics, image, effective communications, first aid, chemistry, electricity, job seeking, ethics, principles of teaching, teacher maturity, student learning principles and academic advising.
COSM262: Teaching Aids
Credits 2This course covers films/videos, charts, mannequins, reference materials, chalkboards, overhead projectors and transparencies.
COSM263: Teaching Methods
Credits 3This course covers preparation, presentation, application, testing, lecture and workbooks. Demonstrations and return demonstrations, discussion, question and answer, projects and field trips.
COSM273: Instructor Clinic
Credits 3This course will cover the fundamentals of business management, to be applied by instructor to strengthen student performance in curriculum areas for supervised field trips and other course related training cosmetology course.
